Diana Al Shammari // THE FOOTBALL GAL

Favourite player?

My favourite player of all time is Zinedine Zidane. I have always been mesmerised by his elegance and flair from a young age and grew up idolizing him.

Nowadays, I like to watch players like Messi and CR7 (of course), Salah, Thomas Müller, Joshua Kimmich, Neymar, Dybala and Co.

What gave you the inspiration for your customised kits?

The inspiration came to me because I wanted to have aesthetically pleasing kits that can be worn anywhere.

Dolce and Gabbana are a big inspiration to me in terms of floral patterns, I have always loved what they do to their clothes and how it makes a fashion statement so I wanted to create that with my football kits.

What other projects do you have planned?

I have a few projects on the horizon relating to the World Cup and taking that kit customisation to the next level but I really can’t give any more details as it’s all in the works right now…

How would you describe the soccer scene in L.A.? What’s happening there right now?

It’s very exciting right now! LAFC are debuting this season in MLS so that adds a bit of heat and rivalry in the city between them and the Galaxy. The soccer scene in LA is still far away from where it should be but it came a long way from how it used to be say a decade ago.

But, soccer is growing in this city and the U.S. in general immensely, and it’s only getting bigger and bigger.

What is the perception of the Galaxy like in the U.S.?

Well they are the most successful team in the league in terms of MLS Cup wins and the second behind D.C. United in terms of overall trophies with only one trophy less than them. They are perceived as a strong team with the expectations to do well and go far every season.

How popular is soccer amongst women in the U.S. compared to in Europe?

From experience, soccer is not as popular among women here as in Europe. There are many factors to that of course but I can tell that it’s getting a lot more popular among women in the U.S. than it used to, especially during the World Cup or other big tournaments during the summer.

The women’s national team is very successful as well and gains a lot of momentum during tournaments so it’s always great to see many women engage in soccer culture.

What more can brands and clubs be doing to get women involved?

For starters, I think having more women representation is key. Whether that’s in their adverts or PR, events, etc. That always helps because football is not just a man’s game and representing the other gender that loves it as well is very important. Also, I would like to see more football fashion that is catered towards women, whether that’s kits or football athleisure that appeals to women with great designs and fit.

Who would you like to collaborate with?

I would love to collaborate with many football brands to bring some of the visions I have combining football and aesthetics that would appeal to either female or male football fans. But, if I have to choose one brand it would be adidas. I’m an adidas kinda gal, always have been. It would be a dream come true to collaborate or something and bring some of those visions to life.
